The Soviets wouldn't have gone bankrupt and we would be extinct.

No department of education.  DoE was a promise from Carter to get teacher votes.

Now, if Reagan sweeps in a republican Senate, like he did in 1980, he gets his tax cuts and miltary spending.

If not, there is gridlock for two years.  Republicans take the Senate in 1978.

With Reagan pushing the military spending, the Soviets are pushed a bit sooner.  They invade Afganistan earlier.  They come to regret this when their troops are tied up instead of being free to move into Iran when the revolution breaks out.  They would have loved to get their hands on that oil.

When the Revolution breaks out, Reagan threatens action, then moves in when they don't respond.  He does not just rescue the hostages, but launches a massive bombing campaign against government facilities, infrastructure and military bases.

Some hostages are killed, but the operation is generally considered a success and the decisive action, generally OK economy, and Reagan's personality see him cruise to victory in 1980.

Why would Republicans take the Senate in 1978?

Naw, Reagan would have let 241 marines get killed by terrorists, and then have them evacuate.
