Mitch Daniels, of all people, says what we've all been thinking - albeit with more adjectives, some of which I've removed from these selections for the sake of readability:

Quote
One needn’t be a hidebound traditionalist to appreciate our national civic ceremonies, those occasions when Americans pause to remember our shared citizenship and our fortune to live in a government subject to the people’s consent. [...] But one such event has passed its sell-by date. On the contrary, it diminishes rather than elevates respect for America and its institutions. I refer to the tasteless, classless spectacle of the modern State of the Union speech.

[...]

It was the Reagan White House, predictably, that took the speech even further from the mere “information of the State of the Union” stipulated by the Constitution. The positioning in the balcony of Lenny Skutnik set a trend that reached its ad absurdum status when President Barack Obama mentioned by name four of his more than 20 guests during his 2015 address.

[...]

Effusive, cued applause, camera-conscious backslapping, stony-faced growls of disapproval and eventually even catcalls from America’s lawmakers have drained what little was left of a serious tutorial about national challenges and priorities. What remains: A tired, farcical theatrical experience more likely to promote cynicism than citizenship in its viewers.

He's on the Howard Schultz shortlist you see.

Tempting to just say "broken clock", etc. but credit where it's due on this one.

Still would love to see how President Mitch Daniels would have handled the SOTU before credit is given.

Hahaha! Remember when this guy was a rising star in the GOP? He is right though, and that description can be applied to anything Trump does.

Of course, the day he signed Indiana's Newly Minted Right-To-Work law was a day just oozing dignity.  Especially in light of the fact that he pledged not to do so in his first campaign.

Best governor Indiana ever had. Far and away the most popular political figure in the state. Excellent president of Purdue University.

If by "best" and "excellent" you mean shamelessly reptilian, sure.

He's absolutely right. The SOTU should go back to what it originally was: a letter to congress.
