President Trump, despite everything that's dogged him in his first term, manages to pull off the unthinkable and get re-elected, mostly thanks to Howard Schultz voters. The House ends up being 240-195 D, and the Senate ends up 50-50, with GOP picking up AL and the Dems picking up CO, MT, AZ, and NC. Governors stay the same.
However, his second term is dogged by further ethics scandals, a souring economy, and more alienation on the world stage.
2022 ends up being a massacre for Republicans. The Dems gain 20 House seats, and in the Senate, they pick up WI, IA, GA, FL, NC, and PA. In terms of governors, Dems pick up IA, VT, NH, MA, MD, GA, AZ, and TX. Governor Ron DeSantis ends up being one of the only two Republican survivors in swing state gubernatorial races (the other being Governor Mike DeWine in Ohio). Governor Gretchen Whitmer, along with her Upper Midwest colleagues Tony Evers and Tim Walz, are easily reelected.
2024 ends up being a free-for-all in both parties' primaries. Governor DeSantis wins the GOP primary after a hard-fought race. He sells himself as a pragmatist who won't sell out the Trump base. Governor Whitmer wins the Dem primary by tapping into the pulse of the party's progressive future while showing her practical, realist credentials.
Governor DeSantis chooses former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley as his running mate. Governor Whitmer chooses Colorado Governor Jared Polis as her running mate.
