If he resigns, who becomes Lieutenant Governor? Or does the office stay vacant?

The Lieutenant Governor would be appointed by Fairfax.

Betting he's the one in the robes. Blackface is inherently something an effete, rich Republican of the time and place would have done, while dressing up like the KKK would definitely be more in line with a Southron Dem back then.

But wasn't he a Republican at this time?

Not that it matters by the way, he should absolutely resign immediately.

He needs to resign. Every day that he doesn't damages the Democratic Party's reputation more and more.

Fairfax should appoint Danica Roem as his replacement.

Franken, Greitens and now Northam. It's always the ones that you'd least expect. God knows what heinous tidbit will come out about Doug Jones or Charlie Baker at this point.

Imagine how many red avatars would call on his resignation if he were Republican!

This is so painful, I wish he'd just resign instead of having to be dragged out of office. Having every person you know in professional life have to turn on you and call for your resignation is pretty awful.

His abortion comments are disgusting and so is this. I was at first for Perriello, but then I liked Northam’s moderate tone and hated Perriello’s anti right to work stuff. So I changed to Northam. I regret this now, I would support Perriello now. I hope he resigns, very hp. Also scratch my idea to make him hhs sec under the next dem. I want Justin Fairfax to be governor, not a fan of Herring.

This is disgusting. Perriello should have won the primary.

The silver lining here is that we get six-year Governor Fairfax. Would he have been eligible to run again if this had happened in December of last year?

Isn’t Northam only a bit over a year into his term? He was elected in 2017.

Wouldn't that be seven years?  There are still three years left in Governor Northam's current term, counting this year as Year One when Northam resigns tomorrow as expected.

I didn't call for the resignation of Michael Ertel.

I mean this was 30 years ago? Am I the only one who thinks this is a big overreaction? Of course what he did was disgusting, but everyone screws up at some point, and peoples views change with time. Should people have to see their lives ruined for stuff like this? I'm sure most people here will say absolutely yes lol.

Given the current state of the country, this is something the voters had every right to know before the election and make a decision based on .

Justin Fairfax just became every Democratic candidate’s potential running mate.

I think ten years ago before Charlottesville and when Trump wasn't President he could've survived this, but so close to a Presidential election with Trump in office it just can't fly. Also considering how expendable he is being a lame duck one term GOV it seems the easy way out.

Well, he, obviously, will resign. But, i can't avoid mental comparison: in Russia no one would resign over events of 35 years ago - we have very different approach to this. In short: a person could be even outright criminal in his youth, and excellent human being in his adult years. Russians belirve in forgiveness, and absolutely ignore "political correctness". Good or bad, but  it's a fact...

Yep, thats how culture works. Spin the globe, and as long as your finger is over a landmass, chances are the customs/expectations/traditions/livelihood is different in some way, shape, or form from any other place.  Even a location on the other side of ones metaphorical finger is going to be different, despite likely being in the same country.
