Just noticed this one today. Home of Ann Arbor and far western metro Detroit. What an unusual voting pattern! Are there any other big counties that went against the national trend like this one? Any small ones? Any at all?

1968: 47% Nixon
1972: 52% McGovern
1976: 51% Ford
1980: 44% Carter

Home state effect on 1976, and University students effect in '72. Not that hard to explain.

Nixon over Humphrey though? Wayne and Monroe went for Carter in 76.

McGovern was a better fit for students than either Carter or Humphrey.  Also, 1972 was the first time 18-20 year-olds could vote in most states.

Good point. Can anyone explain Carter winning in 1980?
