Imagine you were a vice president who had been defeated in a presidential election. Then you must count the electoral votes, and declare your own defeat! Another reason people don't want that job.

Below is a list of those who have fallen on that slipery Vice Presidential step to the Presidency.

George Clinton: Ran as an independent in 1808, and did poorly. He avoided being in Washington during the counting of the electoral votes.

John Breckenridge: Ran against Lincoln, Douglas, and Bell, and was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. Presided over the counting of the electoral votes and announced his own defeat.

Richard Nixon: Ran against Kennedy and was defeated. He presided over the counting of the electoral votes and announced his own defeat.

Hubert Humphrey: Ran against Nixon and was defeated. He was out of the country and did not preside over counting the electoral votes.

Al Gore: Ran against Bush and was defeated. He presided over the counting of the electoral votes and announced his own defeat.
