The Alaska Democrats really have been running circles around the Republicans in the state legislature despite minority status for over a decade now.

As I understand it, Edemon is now an independent, not a Democrat.

As I understand it, Edemon is now an independent, not a Democrat.

That was one of the conditions for the GOP votes, that he becomes an indie. But for all intents and purposes, he is a Democrat.

Intents and purposes... not intensive purposes.  Though I understand why you thought that.

This is undemocratic. I'm not going to be a partisan hack and approve this while condemning the IDC.

Someone winning a majority vote is undemocratic?

If the U.S. had Canadian style politics, with State parties that weren't merely parts of national parties, we'd probably see more cases of State Houses here where despite the Federal Party had a majority, it wasn't one of them in control.

Hasn't it something to do with the fact that for the past legislative terms or so a couple of Democratic representatives had caucused with the Republicans and vice versa in the Alaska Sate House? For instance, during the last term the Democratic caucus consisted of 17 Democrats, 3 Republicans, and 2 Independents. Party lines generally seem to be much more fluid in Alaska than in other states.

The IDC was also inherently supported by a brutally gerrymandered Republican Senate caucus. So again, how is this similarly undemocratic?

Here’s a good article explaining the origins of the coalition.

Obligatory Politico article about Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and his work to turn Alaska’s House purple.

Alaska has a huge internal divide within its GOP over oil taxes (and other issues), which is why Bill Walker was able to win the governorship in 2014.

Because these people ran on a party label to get elected and then betrayed that party once in office. If they'd run as independents I wouldn't have an issue with it.
