Just did this afternoon. Personal friend before he became an employee. Also is my law partner's best friend. It wasn't for one particular thing or incident, but just ongoing problems that we've given months of opportunity to rectify, but had just gotten worse.

I feel cruddy, partner feels like complete s***. But we made the right call. Just looking for other people's experiences, even though I know mine today is a highly unusual one.

I've had to kick out DJs from a college radio station for being incompetent and/or in violation of FCC rules, if that counts.

On the plus side, you can now hire enough transcription secretaries for 'round-the-clock Atlas posting.

No, and I'm very glad my chosen line of work will never put me in that position.

Although having to give out a failing grade to a student is not pleasant exactly.

Yes, it sucks, even if you don't know/like them. Fortunately, I can count the number of times I've had to do this on one hand, and never with a personal friend.

On the other hand, I also frequently encourage companies to realize post-deal "synergies" (i.e. laying people off), but I never feel bad about it. Business is business, and deadwood needs to go.

No, though I did once report something that got a supervisor fired.

Not directly, but I've been in the position of having to report something that was certain to get the person fired (seriously criminal activity while at work).

Nope, I am not old enough (or not successful enough, depending on your perspective) to have been a position to up to this point.  NOT looking forward to ever having to do that, if I do.

Personally fire? No

Rat out a co-worker or two for things like failing to show up to work repeatedly? Too many times to count. Sorry, but no one makes me work alone without comeuppance.

I don't have the authority to unilaterally fire someone, but God knows I've had to generate the paper trail.  If you're in a decent sized organization it happens sooner or later.

No.  I did almost get a guy fired last year for bringing a cell phone to work, but somehow he kept his job/security clearance (he's since moved on, but somehow kept the clearance).

short answer-computer maintenance
long answer-I maintain the secure voice switch, attached phones and circuits for US StratCom/Offutt AFB.  Giving the decision makers 24/7/365 secure communications to other decision makers around the world.
cool answer-I get paid to take naps underground

I've always thought there was something ironic about a hardcore Big L libertarian earning their paycheck from the military industrial complex. Grin

I don't have the authority to do that. But often in projects for class I am the lead dude and I will, and have dozens of times, kick people out mid to end project if they are found to be a pestilence to my senses. Sometimes I already have my mind made up to kick them out less then half of the way in, and will wait to strand them towards the very end so they are left scrambling. The last part is only if they are really revolting to me though.

you and me both brother.  Sometimes, it bothers me, but at the end of the day they pay me really well to do almost nothing.  I look at it as if I'm "taking advantage of the man" *

or at least that's what I tell myself when I fall asleep at night (on the couch at work)

(and I'm not a "hardcore Big L Libertarian" either, I just think freedom is the most important thing, and their candidates tend to believe in it more than Dems or Pubbies)

*not that I'm not doing my part.  I've kept this bitch locked down on midshift for almost 20 years and my customers (a bunch of Air Force/Navy officers), coworkers and people in other maintenance shops I have to deal with all like me, so I must be doing something right.  Which is mostly sleeping Smiley

Well, I once vetoed extending the employment contract for a student assistant, instead opting for re-hiring his predecessor.
