I've noticed that Gore's Social Security "lockbox" doesn't really get mentioned anymore.

Nor is there any concern with 'over-taxation' because of the 'surpluses as far as the eye can see.'

nobody ever seriously cared about any of the issues other than for political expediency and due to situational circumstances. The idea that voters unanimously agreed on certain issues or were divided during an era is bunk. the minority that makes up the political coalition at the top (which largely only exists due to circumstances outside of its control) dictates the political issues to a largely passive and lethargic majority at the bottom who are largely unaware of such issues or just dont care

Secret sex scenes in video games. Also Satanism in preschools, although that was already past its peak, and both are still around to done extent.

Stem cell research?

Gay marriage probably had the same amount of "care" in 1999 as it does today, just with public opinion being reversed.

I'm not sure that any issue has completely fallen off the map, at least construed broadly. E.g. sodomy laws aren't really an issue anymore, but you still have plenty of people who want to ban gay marriage. And no one talks about removing Hussein or getting revenge for the USS Cole bombing, but Iraq and al-Qaeda are still issues of importance.

The one issue that does come to mind is the Balkans. Domestically, Clinton's interventions there were a pretty big deal.

From what I've read about politics in the nineties, there was a weird, almost prurient focus on The American Teenager in general, some issues relating to which other posters have mentioned already, some of which (Are Midriff-Baring Tops Too Sexy For Our Daughters?) were even sillier (at least as issues to be treated politically). Now the political class seems almost to pride itself on not giving a sh**t about teenagers and their problems. Not sure which is worse.

School shootings, y2k, which CD to put in your discman, boomboxes, if there were inappropriate pictures on the film roll, buying flared jeans

Compassionate conservatism, violence and sex in media (thanks Tipper), inner-city crime

The future seemed much more optimistic in 1999 than today.

Microsoft and Slobodan Milosevic

1999 was absurdly apolitical compared to today
