So apparently under current trademark law a company can claim a color to themselves within their industry if it is "used to identify the brand". Supposedly this protects them and consumers from "misleading products", but I find the idea that a product can be misleading from color alone to be outright ridiculous. For example, if I'm selling coffee and my logo happens to have starbucks green in it, they can sue me, no matter how different the rest of it is.
