209 people arrested in second day of environmental protests
Quote
Police have arrested 209 people in two days of protests after climate-change activists blocked some of London’s most important junctions including Oxford Circus and Marble Arch, causing traffic chaos.

The protests, led by British climate group Extinction Rebellion, brought parts of central London to a standstill again on Tuesday.

Extinction Rebellion, which generated headlines with a semi-nude protest in the House of Commons earlier this month, is demanding the government reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

It’s telling of the British Poster’s alignment here when this is not mentioned, but the CUK’s are a half a page discussion.

When a party polling 1% is talked about so heavily in a multiparty system, especially one doing a moderate approach in a FPTP one, there is no stopping my enragement.

Extinction Rebellion have been at it again today; quite a lot of their stickers turning up in various places on the Tube.

Also chained themselves to the front of Corbyn's house.

Has the Labour Party reacted and given an official statement on the protests?

The Conservatives are literally crashing down on the polls, and not just for the EU elections.

It seems ComRes will release a GE poll tomorrow which has them on 23% (!) and Farage's Brexit Party right at their heels with 14%.

I'm not sure that "push poll" is quite right, but it is worth bearing in mind that it was commissioned by an organisation called "Brexit Express" (who are actually a registered political party) and it prompted for more parties than normal, including the Brexit Party and ChUK-TIG (but not the Greens).  So it is not particularly surprising that it gives those two a higher score than other polls, and the established parties a bit lower.

I note that "Brexit Express" did not leak its EU referendum figures: Remain 58, Leave 42.

Or indeed the Euro election poll ComRes also did for them - which had Labour well in front with 33% (just as in their GE survey) and the Brexit Party trailing in 3rd......

sigh

Hopefully definitively proving they don't give a sh!t about any issues apart from their pet one will finally put the long overdue nail in the SNP coffin, but unfortunately I don't think we'll have such a luxury.

LOL at 5% who think UKIP is anti-Brexit.

Was “the Remain Party” taken? So stupid. Or Umunna’s ego got in the way, or both.

I always thought the choice was a flash in the pan 'anti-Brexit' Party, or a longer term Macron esque project- they went for the second, but that was back before anyone really expected us to have EU elections.

They're right to want a brand beyond Brexit; but there's a big danger they won't exist to see it.

Of course this all part of a wider story; the reality is that Labour are still holding onto a large chunk of remain voters, largely through their ability to make sympathetic noises, but also because people who voted remain in the most part are more likely to vote Labour. Alongside the 'anti-brexit' vote being split among the Greens/Lib Dems/SNP and Plaid.

And because by no means all remain voters identify that as their sole raison'd'etre.

Its a now often forgotten reality that in the months immediately after the 2016 referendum some sort of "soft" Brexit would have easily passed through parliament, and been mostly accepted by voters, had the government had the sense to decide that was the best way forward.

Instead, our PM - influenced by siren voices like "vagina monologues" Dacre and Tim Nickothy - decided that offering unattainable unicorns was the way to go. With all the consequences that have unfolded since.

They could have (should have) named themselves the "Remain Party" (or something similar) and then renamed themselves later once Brexit wasn't the only issue. It was obvious at the time that Brexit was both the driving force behind the creation of the party and the dominant political issue for at least the next year or so of politics. But, most significantly, the members of CUK didn't present much reason to leave their original parties other than disagreements over Brexit (well, Heidi Allen should always have been a Lib Dem, but that's neither here nor there).

I recognize that the British party naming rules make finding a good party name actually shocking difficult, but there were definitely options ("Centre Party"?).

The main reason it started was because of antisemitism within Labour; that's the reason why Luciana Berger left, and why the others followed suit (although it remains baffling why the most vocal critics- Margaret Hodge/Ruth Smeeth/Louise Ellman didn't leave when they clearly agree)

My understanding is that whilst it was planned in the long term; that pushed them off, and mouthballed into this.

It was basically three political projects rolled into one- the anti-Corbyn Labour Right, the anti-Brexit crowd, and the 'centrists all holding hands' gang.

I won't go into the details of the MPs, but they're really such a hilariously strange mix
