Cordray underperformed in areas that he needed to win to win Ohio.

Rural Appalachian like Southeast Ohio was a rare bastion of support for the democrats in comparison to the farmlands of western ohio despite both being socially conservative. But that bastion finally realigned to the republicans with Trump winning high margins when Obama got 40%+ in many of those counties. And they turned out far far less for Cordray than they did for Strickland.

Along with the metropolitan areas of Dayton, Mahoning, The area from Toledo to Cleveland.

What really helped the republicans is that Kasich's governorship was associated with a huge recovery and people didnt felt a need to vote for a democrat say the way that Michigan did(especially since Ohio is more rightwing than Michigan that went to Trump by a handful of votes).  FYI: The economy of the midwest except for Minnesota, Iowa and Indiana to a lesser extent has been in a precarious state since friggin 2000 due to deindustrialization.

Brown overperformed entirely on incumbency advantage and a dogpoop opponent. As soon has he's gone that seat is closer to Safe R than it is Lean R.

In any race between reasonably average candidates in OH the Republican will be heavily favored. Cordray was a strong candidate (can't get much more Purple heart populist than CFPB chair) but not an Obama-tier candidate. The areas of the state that used to be Democratic enough to make the state competitive have turned hard right and 2018 was proof that this is going to be hard to reverse or offset.

Yes, but our judicial elections are non-partisan in the general election.

Ohio is moving hard right. Richard Cordray was one of the strongest candidates they could have put up, and he still lost to Mike DeWine. As soon as Sherrod Brown leaves the Senate, that seat is Safe R.

Ohio...continued its trend from 2016. Most enthusiastic Dems expected the trend would reverse or stall (or at least slow). But the trend continued as hard as it did in 2016.

Just a random point: Since 1991, Ohio only once elected a Democratic governor. That was Ted Strickland in 2006 when his Republican predecessor had a massive corruption scandal and an approval rating in the single digits (the lowest on gubernatorial record) while Democrats had a good night nationally. And Strickland was voted out of office four years later, even though it was closer than 2018 in a Republican wave year.

In other words, the OH Dems have become the FL Dems 2.0 ? Cursed ?

Cordray went up against DeWine. It'd have been like expecting Baron Hill to defeat Todd Young in 2016

I agree with the sentiment that Kasich played a big role in the GOP to keep the OH governorship, but it don’t explain the horrible GCB at the national and state legislatures. Something like R+5 on a D+9 night. That’s not the sign of a swing state but a state that has completely fallen to the Republicans

DeWine is a conservative but he governs to the center, only Tim Ryan and Sherrod Brown are centrist enough to win statewide offices in OH

It's not that complicated: Ohio is a red state now.

Great white nationalist term. If only your fellow conservatives could stop being such "cucks," and give me the straight dope when they haven't downed a few drinks. Let me tell you, it was quite a shock when the stepfather of one of my childhood friends, a respectable small business owner and avid Republican, started dropping the N-word at 3am! Yeah, I haven't forgotten that conversation! Of course, I'm sure if you asked him, he isn't a racist — he just hates n*ggers.

Thankfully, the scales have fallen from the eyes of most white liberals — turns out, black folks were telling the truth all along!

I think Mike Braun’s mega coattails probably had a lot to do with it.
