If Pete Buttigieg were straight would he still receive the same amount of attention as a candidate? I dare say him being the first openly gay candidate for a major party, and from Indiana of all places, certainly adds gravity to his run.

Not initially. It got him on people’s radar but it’s not why he is continuing to get attention. There is actual substance keeping him relevant.

Nah.  He's got a funny name--that's enough to get media attention in our brain-dead age.

He speaks 6 or 7 languages fluently, including Norwegian, Arabic and Maltese. You're treating him as if he were as dumb as Trump.

Not my intent.  By all accounts, Buttigieg is a brilliant individual, and I've seen nothing that would make me question that.  I'm just treating the American media market as if it were as dumb as Trump, which it mostly is.

He would get a similar amount of attention, but the press would be negative. Without his historic candidacy, his radical positions would become the main story about his campaign. Those radical positions (like court packing and Electoral College abolition), would basically turn his candidacy into a joke

Of course not. The mayor of a city with a stagnant or otherwise declining population isn't interesting at all without a gimmick or identity politics.

Buttigieg is like a quieter, multi-lingual Beto, with a husband instead of a wife.

Sort of. Mostly because him being heterosexual wouldn't have given him a rising star status to being with. Though if he did run anyway in that scenario, he probably would still be at the same level of support and on the come up as he is at now. That wouldn't change. He is receiving attention in spite of his sexuality. That was just what made him noteworthy before the primary began.

He's also a veteran, though that doesn't seem to be helping Gabbard, but that's also because of her own unique issues and failings.

I’m gay.

I find Pete to be authentic but I think he comes across a bit weak.

A bit weak in what sense?

I'm also gay, but I know in my heart that Andrew Yang's IQ is even higher than Buttigieg's.

He's a Harvard man. Of course he belongs. It would be much more interesting to ask a certain uncomfortable question about everyone's favourite cop.

Probably wouldn’t be getting as much attention but he’s smart enough and articulate enough to have still gained traction.

Electoral college abolition is very popular with democrats and the public at large. It isn't a radical position. I assume all 2020 democrats support it.

He'd still get some coverage as a mayor like Larry Agran did but definitely less of it. He also wouldn't have as much support as he does, since his support seems to come disproportionately from gay men.

The majority of the country supports abolishing the EC and has for a while now.
