Tuesday, November 8, 2005

The city of Hillsdale, Michigan, population approximately 9,000, elected 18 year old high school student Michael Sessions as Mayor for a 4 year term, over 51 year old incumbent Mayor Doug Ingles by a vote of 670 to 668.

Michael had a write in campaign and won the office.

Mayor Sessions is completing high school while attending to civic duties.

So if you have ever thought you would like to be Mayor of your town or city, don't give up.  There may be hope for you yet.

Any thoughts or comments?

Said some general stuff and wouldn't give any specific ideas or details on his plans.

Any town or city would be nuts to elect an eighteen year old Mayor, or anyone in that age range.

Detroit has or had a 20 year old state representative

Being a rep is a little different from being an executive.

That's not surprising, though, given that he's going to be mayor of a town of 9,000.  Keeping things running smoothly is generally how these guys perform well, not by sweeping into office promising drastic changes or grandiose plans.  He mentioned something on CNN about wanting to revitalize the town's economy...sounds like the generic small town mayor schtick to me.

Go for it, when you're old enough.

I wish you well.

Its a small town and he seems to really care about his community - that's why he campaigned so hard for the office.  I think he'll do just fine.
