In local and state elections, the Police Benevolent Association and the Fraternal Order of Police and other police unions endorse Democratic candidates for city council, mayor, auditor, governor, U.S. Senator.

But why do they endorse Republicans most of the time for president/vice president, etc.?

Vote Democratic at state/local level: protect pensions and collective bargaining rights.

Vote Republican at federal level: nobody gets mad when you crack some black teenager's skull open across the sidewalk during a traffic stop.

This is the correct answer, especially due to the prominence of #BlackLivesMatter in recent years.

I don't think they really support Democrats at the state/local level either. Police unions were huge supporters of Scott Walker, e.g., despite all of his tensions with unions, and he specifically exempted them from his union crackdowns.

Why though?

Many law enforcement folks feel (regardless of whether you agree or not that they should feel this way) that democrats are anti-police. At the local level they just support whoever will back then up in pensions etc.
