We all know that George W. Bush balanced the budget after eight years of tax-and-spend liberal Bill Clinton; however, the lying subversives in the leftist press claim that it was Clinton who balanced the budget and that Bush blew up the deficit. Obviously this is untrue since the Republicans are the fiscally responsible (as well as morally upright) party. Do you think Bush doesn't get enough credit on the budget from the general public because of the lying press? If so, what do you think can be done to fix this?

This is ridiculous.

Everyone knows that Reagan balanced the budget after two months in office.

The only credit GWB ever deserved is a credit for good behavior while serving his sentence for war crimes.

This joke is more tortured than the Abu Ghraib prisoners.

That's a good one.

I ran into someone once who seriously claimed that the only reason the budget didn't balance under Bush by the end, was because he bailed out the banks.

Bush cut taxes to increase revenues. Brilliant!

I mean, Trump and co. were making this BS argument too; it's not unique to Bush - most Republicans believe (or at least claim to believe) that any tax cut will somehow cause such a massive increase in business activity and/or income to more than cancel it out.

It's like they looked at the Laffer curve and decided that it went from 0 to 25 instead of 100. And then they also go and cite "muh Laffer curve" every time someone points out how stupid their conclusions are.

I've noticed a tendency in conservative circles to claim that everything bad that happened under Bush 43 was actually Clinton's fault.

The Laffer Curve is real, but what Republicans either ignore or don't realize is that we're not on the part of the curve where cutting taxes will increase government revenue.  We haven't been there since at least the Reagan tax cuts and most likely we haven't been since the Kennedy tax cuts.

I know you aren’t being serious, but I’d like to discuss revenue and balanced budget. The only consistency with this is that, obviously, revenue falls during recessions and rises at much faster rates when the deficit is shrinking and the budget is balanced.

1. Laffer initially proposed his idea to Cheney and Rumsfeld, and even they thought it was stupid.

2. HW Bush famously called the Laffer Curve, "voodoo economics".

3. Laffer voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996.

Trump has continued the Dubya policies, of extending tax cuts for the wealthiest, while ordinary Americans struggle.

Dems will win in 2020, due to the fact Trump was the third term Dubya

If you're being serious, this is a legitimately monstrous comment.

Yeah, not sure how someone can argue the concepts behind the Laffer Curver "aren't real," the debate is about the semantics of it and how to shape policy...

In all seriousness, it does annoy me that Bush was actually bringing down the deficit for most of his second term all for naught due to the Great Recession in his last year.

"Pillars of salt and pillars of sand"

Remember though Iraq was kept off budget and paid for with emergency funding mechanisms. This meant that the budgets were artificially lower than what they actually were.
