In both years ending in 2, they were the closest states in their whole respective elections and voted Democrat. And in the years ending in 6, they were one point states again as they were in ___2, and the Republicans won them by a larger margin.

And by the way, Georgia was the first state going to Clinton on election night. How come Florida wasn't the first state, or even one of the first, to go for Obama in 2012, and Georgia was the first state for Clinton in 1992? If anything, I see Georgia taking like 2 weeks. And New Jersey taking up to 1 week.

States were called a lot faster back in the day. In 1988, north Dakota was called with only 6 votes counted. Stevenson in 1952 was actually called to have more electoral votes than Eisenhower at a couple times in the night. So Georgia being called right away is not that shocking. I think it may have been Florida 2000 that changed this pattern

He clearly said he was comparing Georgia in 1992 to Florida in 2012, so bush winning Florida in 1992 does not change the overall point of this

You know clearly Romney won Georgia in 2012.

Remember the polls saying "Clinton 347 Trump 191" and then someone said, "I'm surprised they let him keep Georgia!" If anything, it's because of Romney.

I believe the calls in poll closing times became a thing in 1978 or 1980.

The media was extremely hasty in calling Election back in the 1980s and 1990s.

This is the extremely short but accurate version of the answer

If they continued to be hasty in 2016 they probably would've called Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania for Clinton, even though they were states won by Trump.

An Atlas user by the name of Ben Kenobi mistakenly called Pennsylvania for Clinton.
A local newspaper by the name of the Detroit Free Press mistakenly called Michigan for Clinton.
