Suppose that RFK had lived, but lost the 1968 Democratic nomination to Hubert Humphrey. Assuming that Nixon's election isn't butterflied away, does RFK run in 1972?

I doubt it, unless butterflies make Nixon's first term worse than OTL. If that isn't the case, he likely sits 72 out and goes for 76.

In retrospect that would've been the smarter choice, but in 1971 Nixon wasn't popular and he even trailed Ed Muskie in some polls. RFK would be the frontrunner for '72 in this scenario, and would probably have lead Nixon by a greater margin than Muskie, so he likely runs barring outside circumstances that convince him to sit out the race.

Yes.  They'd have begged him to run.

The DNC Convention was divided anyways in 1968 protests.

RFK could of made a comeback, but he would of done more to help his brother Teddy Kennedy win California and the election 271-266 over Reagan had the Watergate scandal broke.

As a result of 1974, RF would have been a vocal critique of Nixon and he would of saved the Dem party from Carter, if chosed to run or not, in deference to Teddy Kennedy

He would have run again in 1976.

He most likely would have waited for 1976, but:

President Richard Nixon (R-CA) / Vice President Spiro Agnew (R-MD) ✓
Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) / Senator Stuart Symington (D-MO)

The New Deal Coalition wasn't coming back, but the Kennedy ticket would be more stable and moderate-appealing than McGovern's.

Butterflies would likely prevent Carter.

He probably runs in 1976, or 1980 if Gerald Ford somehow gets re-elected due to the butterfly effect.
