McKean represents Jackson and Jones counties in Eastern Iowa and his defection only gives the Republicans a 53-47 seat majority in the House.

This seat had an absurd 32% R swing from 2012-->2016. I wonder if he's just retiring. Because if not, just LOL

Based on the article, this appears to be more based on his own views rather than other changes which have been due to the terrain moving leftward.

Nice. Now we Democrats only need +4 to take the Iowa House.

It looks like the Democratic candidate for Auditor, Treasurer, and obviously AG won here, while everyone else lost.

This was almost certainly an Obama seat in 2012.  It may have even gone for Kerry in 2004.

2016 numbers in many places probably aren't that indicative of much.

The good news is that Iowa in general absolutely LOVES incumbents for some reason.

Good luck getting back any legislative body in a Presidential year in the most iconic Obama-Trump state.

now that is because the median seat is left of the state by about 6 points. Anyone know the median seat in the state house?

In the most Dem-leaning year in ages...in the middle of a GOP midterm. Presidential turn-out with DJT on the top of the ticket will reverse that.

Are there like any issues where this dude would actually vote against party-line Republican positions or is this just about how much Trump sucks?

He actually had quite a history of voting with Dems in the state legislature before this according to the article the tweet linked:
Quote
A moderate Republican, McKean split with his party on many key votes in recent years, including the 2017 collective bargaining and workers compensation bills. He was the only Republican earlier this year to side with Democrats on an amendment to a proposed constitutional amendment on gun rights. He also joined Democrats last week in voting against a bill that allowed stun guns on college campuses. And McKean was the sole Republican to oppose the party’s push to change how the process of selecting judges in Iowa.

Reynolds won this district by double digits, if he is lucky enough not to be Arlen Spectered in the primary, by a real Democrat (who would proceed to lose in the GE), he will be Blanched in the GE by a Republican
