Democrats could have done it in 2000 and 2016 if not for some tactical errors made by their campaigns back then (yes, external factors also played a role, but I'm pretty sure that there were things within the campaigns' control which could have been done to ensure victory, even with those external factors still in play). This means that after the next two-term Democratic president (assuming that the president himself/herself is popular in the final months of his/her second term), the Democratic party needs to run a candidate who is in touch with the mood of the national electorate, not just the Washington DC elitist bubble, and the candidate they run has to avoid unforced errors during his/her campaign.

The next consecutive term for will be for the GOP. If the Democrats continue to embrace socialism and radical leftist ideas they will not get the White House back for a long time. Trump will win in 2020 by a slim margin. If the GOP chooses Nikki Haley as the nominee in 2024 it will be a huge slap in the face to the Democratic Party. Nikki Haley will win by a landslide as the radical left embraces socialism. The only way Democrats can take back the White House is if they become moderate.

Why don't you ask Presidents John Kerry & Hillary Clinton about your suggested path?
