The Federal Agency for Civic Education has launched its Wahl-O-Mat for this year's European election to be held from May 23 to May 26.

Question 1: EU-wide binding ballot measures ought to be adopted.

Question 2: The EU ought to set higher goals to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Question 3: The EU member states ought to found a joint European army.

Question 4: The European Union ought to give priority to the promotion of organic agriculture.

1. Yes (Unimportant) - I think this is saying to have EU referendums, which is fine with me.
2. Yes (Important) - Obviously we need to fight climate change.
3. Neutral - I don't really care if they do this or not.
4. No (Important) - The organic foods industry is pretty much based on a bed of lies, and is inefficient.

I didn't actually know what was the apt translation for Bürgerentscheid.

I looked it up, the translated German wikipedia page said this:

"A referendum (Bürgerentscheid) is an instrument of direct democracy in Germany at the local level "

1. No (important). Power should reside with national parliaments. National referendums are a good and necessary instrument, but EU referendums would override the competencies of the national parliaments and further hollow out our democracies. No competencies should be at the EU level.

2. No (important). We need to move towards adopting renewable energy for the sake of the environment and our geopolitical position, but these decisions need to be made on the national level. Anti-CO2 religion will destroy our economies. Anthropogenic climate change theory is an elaborate scam promoted to increase the competencies of the government and make us less free.

3. No (important). In time, an EU army would be used to crack down on civilians opposing the Brussels government's decisions. Soldiers usually don't use violence against their own people, but by using soldiers from other EU countries the EU could circumvent this. The crackdown on the yellow vests shows how violent these people are willing to get. It is important to prevent this.

4. No (unimportant). Phase out all EU agricultural subsidies.

I hate distinguishing between "importance", so I just said yes to everything bar the last question.

That's what the Wahl-O-Mat forces me to. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But it's totally okay, of course, to just click on "unimportant" for every question: that's what most people I think do.

1: Yes (unimportant) - It would be nice to get EU wide referendums though referendums are a double edged sword as Brexit has clearly shown. Still overall a good idea though, but with limitations´

2: Yes (important) - Climate change is an extremely important issue and the EU should do everything in its power to fight against it

3: Yes (unimportant) - Again, an EU army is nice. However, as with most "closer union" stuff, it's something I can't see happening in the short term. Still I certainly support that, it would give the EU's foreign policy a bit more weight (after all most member states already don't disobey the EU much on foreign policy)

4: Neutral - I don't really have a strong opinion in favour or againts. The EU's agricultural subsidies have tons of problems, but organic farming isn't exactly one of them. Farming should be sustainable and healthy, which doesn't necesarily mean organic.

Question 1: EU-wide binding ballot measures ought to be adopted.
-> No, I'm all for a represenative democracy. Only infrastructure projects or very local matters should be subjects to ballot initatives.

Question 2: The EU ought to set higher goals to reduce CO₂ emissions.
-> Yes, but mainly through transforming the energy system. I'm opposed to higher taxes on individuals or businesses.

Question 3: The EU member states ought to found a joint European army.
-> Yes, because it is more cost effective and promotes European integration.

Question 4: The European Union ought to give priority to the promotion of organic agriculture.
-> Yes.

The funny thing is that I did the Wal-O-Mat and my result was #1 CDU 70% and #2 SPD 61%, even though I'm a member of the latter. I got the exact same result for the Bremen state election.

Question 1: No (unimportnat), I really don't believe in referendums except in very narrow instances. Politicians are hired to do this job, voters are too easily beguiled, as we can see in Brexit and, more tellingly, in how support for medicare-for-all in the U.S. changes wildly when people are told that they'll be taxed for it, that it's a "liberal policy" etc.
Question 2: Yes (important)
Question 3: Yes (unimportant- as of now)
Question 4: No (unimportant)
