Donald Trump broke the Republican Party and rebuilt it in his own image.

Does the 2024 GOP primaries continue Trumpism or is it back to normal?

If Trump wins, Trumpism

If Trump loses, back to normal

If Trump wins, its Pence with someone like DeSantis as his running mate. If Trump loses its someone like Rick Scott.

If the 2020 winner is a corporate/establishment Democrat, then I expect the GOP to continue going in a Trumpian direction.

If the 2020 winner is a populist/progressive Democrat, then I expect the GOP to move away from Trumpism.

No matter who wins in 2020, I think the Republican nominee will either be Ted Cruz or Nikki Haley.

It's a lot more complicated than simply "Trumpism" and "Back to normal". There are several wings of the Republican party. Trumpism as a generality can include populists, paleo-conservatives, social conservatives, and even libertarians.

For example, if someone like DeSantis is nominated, then that could be described as both "Trumpism" and "Back to normal" since he's basically Trump without the heavy rhetoric and he's a lot more presidential.

The only real "Back to normal" candidates I can think of would be Baker, Rubio, and maybe Haley. Cruz will not win 2024 and I doubt he will run at all.

Cruz is certainly not a “back to normal” candidate. The only area Cruz lines up with the establishment is on foreign policy, other than that he is pretty anti establishment. Especially on immigration.

There is no "back to normal",  Trump loses and the GOP will find another movement with which to "stick it to teh libs".

Trumpism will look like bleeding heart socialism once everything is accounted for. It's gonna be the same rehabilitation process that also went to Bush Jr undeservedly...all because of comparison.

Go back to Rick Perry, Hermain Cain and Romney. Cruz-frontrunner, Rubio-pro amnesty and Tom Cotton or DeSantis want a flat tax. It will be an exact replay of what happened in 2012. Each of the candidates replicates 2012 candidates.  No, it wont go back to normal, and Harris can duplicate Obama's success

Trumpism will go whether Trump wins or not as it is for the most part a personality cult which will expire when he leaves office.

Trump changed Republican politics by saying the quiet part out loud. No Republican will get elected droning on about taxes when the base is itching for red meat about "dirty immigrants."

The simple fact is the Republicans will have to continue to retain Trumpist elements even while in terms of style they may revert to normal. It is just simply where the base is and no amount of donor money will change that.

The underlying factors that opened the door to Trump have not gone away and in fact have been rendered even more salient by him winning. People who were hostile to that have seen their numbers shrink within the GOP while those favorable towards it have increased.

Presuming that things will just magically go back to normal if Trump loses, is making the same mistake that the Republicans made after Romney lost and presumed the next GOP candidate would  be just like Bush if not a Bush himself (Jeb). In fact, it was the opposite and the eventually GOP nominee could not have been more different from Bush.

When making presumptions, don't ever bet against the Demographic tide, and that includes changes within the GOP itself.

Depends on whether Trump wins or loses in 2020.

If he loses, the candidates will probably try to act as though he never existed... but if he wins, they'll be trying their hardest to be even Trumpier than Trump.
