Voted other, for the Confederation Period (1783-1788), though the Civil War and the Great Depression aren't far behind.

When slavery existed, I'd say. Voted civil war.

Certainly the Civil War has to be it among the listed choices.

That is an interesting point.

Vietnam easily. 58,000 people died for a bullsh**t war, and that's not including the maimed, wounded, or those non-directly affected by the war.

A bullsh*t war being worse than the existence of literally slavery... interesting take.

Reconstruction, when the country stood back and let terrorists overthrow multiracial and representative state governments.

I voted the Vietnam War because thats the only 1 on this list that was really a problem specific to the US, while also encompassing the entire US, while not being a problem to the rest of the world.

And the poll at hand didn't mention the antebellum South; it mentioned the Civil War specifically. A time when the government is knowingly sending young men to die in an unwinnable war is far worse  than the government fighting a war to end slavery.

The question wasn't worst war, but worst period in history.  It was far from certain the US would remain united during the Civil War era and it was by far the bloodiest and most destructive war in our history.

This.

Idk, pretty sure it might've been a pretty big problem for Vietnam.

Voting for any of the listed options other than the Civil War is simply not historically literate. The Great Depression was awful but not brutally violent, World War II was the darkest period in many other countries' histories but left the US almost completely intact and arguably did a great deal of good for American society (although obviously involvement in a global total war is still not at all something to be celebrated for its own sake), and the more recent options are small potatoes by comparison.

Why even do a poll if you'll be shamed for naming anything post-1865

Other: Reconstruction and the decades after it in the South. That told you more about what America’s real identity was than the Civil War did.

The Civil War was obviously the darkest period for the whole nation, but it’s much more depressing as a historical observer to witness what happened afterwards.

Clearly the Civil War.

It had the potential to destroy the American nation .

Civil War. Sorry Vietnam, but you had to go up against the champion in round one.

I think the lead up to the Civil War was the worst, because without a definitive war America definitely would have split forever.

Clearly the Civil War.

It had the potential to destroy the American nation .
