Last time I went to one I was at a basketball tournament in Palm Springs, California back in 2015 but it wasn’t horrible.

Last time I went there the dinner was fine. Much better than TGIF or Chill's as far as chain restaurants go.

This. A few years ago, my grandmother gave me a $25 gift card to Applebees for my birthday (bless her heart, she tried), so I decided to just go there for lunch by myself and use the card all at once. The appetizer and entree were pretty bad (just frozen swill microwaved), and it took forever to get out to me. The dessert was fine but nothing special.

At the end of the meal, the manager apologized for the bad service and said my meal was free. I wasn't even able to burn my gift card

I last ate there about two years ago, at my friend's behest. I just had their pretzel sticks and some sort of specialty soft drink, I thought they were both pretty good actually. But then again, I ordered those strategically since it's hard to f*** up a pretzel. So with that being the case, I can't say I'm a fan.

Also the restaurant has a reputation, at least where I live, for being a major hangout for pre-teens  who are obnoxious and tip horribly. Is this true anywhere else?

I stopped going to that level of restauraunt (TGIF,Chillis,Outback) sometime in the mid 90s.  sh**tty fast food doesn't taste that much worse and it's way cheaper and faster.  Good fast food is even better and is still cheaper and faster.  I don't go to proper restaurants either.  There is a kind of fancy Japanese place we go to from time to time and the wife likes a specific local pizza place.

My wife doesn't like Applebees.  I think it's OK, but the quality has gone down over the years.

I eat at Applebee's quite often, and almost always order the same thing: a French Onion Soup and a Thai Shrimp Salad.

Haven’t been there in a while.  When I was there, it was, meh.  Sounds like it’s gotten worse?
