Those Dutch Calvinists in the far northwestern part of the state always have high turnouts in the GOP Caucus, and I would assume they voted for Robertson overwhelmingly. Dole being from a farm state must have helped as well.

Isn't it something like a "tradition" or even a "running gag" that a Republican who once won an Iowa caucus can't win it a second time? I'd assume that Bush would even have lost against Ron Paul in 2004. lol

I've always wanted to know more about the '88 Republican primaries. Given just how popular Reagan was both with the public and Republicans, I would've thought H.W. Bush would've had a smoother path to the nomination. Granted, he still won big, but Gore won every state.

Robertson obviously won due to his strong religiosity, as Iowa Republicans love religious conservatives. Dole being from Kansas probably helped him slightly as well, and perhaps Bush was just a bad fit somehow? he did lose the state by double digits to Dukakis in the general, after all.

I think it was more the Democratic Party rallied around Gore after the Clinton Impeachment stuff, and I think they rallied around him quickly because they really feared Bush and McCain and figured that rallying around the VP was the safest thing.

Had it not been for that Gore would have gotten some challengers other than Bradley (who I think would have also been stronger).

Then for 1988, I think Bush had issues in the Upper Midwest due to the 1980s farm crisis, and that's where Dole got most of his support. Not sure why Robertson managed to get over 10% of the vote though.

That’s not true. Dole won Iowa caucuses both in 1988 and in 1996.
