The Republican party in 1996 was much less anti intellectual, anti media and being the party of conspiracy theories than in 2012. That turned off a lot of white college educated suburbanites in places like NOVA, suburban Philly, the Research Triangle, Atlanta suburbs etc.

I believe Romney did better than McCain though
