German Chancellor Angela Merkel was awarded an honorary degree in iaw by Harvard University on May 30.
In her 34-minute commencement address at the university, which she hold partly in English but mostly in German, warned against the perils of isolationism, nationalism, building walls, climate change and the spreading of alternative facts and pushed for fighting the causes of displacement and forced migration.
Even though she never mentioned Trump, Merkel clearly delivered an anti-Trumpism speech, for which she received standing ovations after she called for "truthfulness in our attitude toward others" and ourselves, which she said "requires us not to describe lies as truth and truth as lies".
