Houthi missile attack on Saudi airport 'injures 26'quote

Three women and two children were among those hurt when the arrivals hall at Abha airport was hit early on Wednesday, according to a statement.

The rebels said they had launched a cruise missile at the facility.

...

Coalition military spokesman Col Turki al-Maliki ... said the attack on a civilian airport, which is about 110km (70 miles) from the border with Yemen, was a violation of international humanitarian law and that it might constitute a war crime.

...

Houthi run Al-Masirah TV ... said it was the second time the Houthis had fired a cruise missile. The first reportedly targeted a nuclear power plant under construction in Abu Dhabi in 2017. There were no reports of a missile reaching the emirate at the time.

...

The UN says the fighting in Yemen has left at least 7,000 civilians dead and 11,000 injured. About 65% of the deaths have been attributed to coalition air strikes.

At a minimum, I think we can all agree the Saudis never expected their incursion into Yemen to go on this long or that the Houthis would be able to strike across the border. Perhaps they wouldn't have been so eager to start a proxy war with Iran there if they had.

Iran has many decades of practice running a proxy war too.  Dumb move Saudis.  Maybe they correctly assumed that they wouldn't be as handcuffed by international pressure as the Israelis are and that all they would have to do would be to crush the Houthis militarily....then they found out they couldn't.  Now they don't know what to do.  So they buy even more US gear, and they still can't do it.

The Saudis have the third-highest military budget in the world (trailing only the U.S. and PRC). They're buying a s**tload of the modern equipment, but still can't deliver. What's good the expensive equipment is if your army is (for a number of reasons) laughably incompetent.

In comparison Iran spends much less on its military and struggles with having to operate on older equipment, but their army is pretty good. General Abizaid himself said that despite these problems the Iranian armed forces are probably second only to Israel in the region.

And it's not diffrent than what Israel had to deal with in its earlier wars. Egypt and Syria had, in many ways, superior equipment in both 1967 and 1973. They were still able to prevail due to better personnel and modern military thinking.

Very true. I'm always reminded of that story from the Yom Kippur War, when the Egyptians received another brand new Soviet tank. The crew just jumped in and drove straight to the front. Then they fired at the enemy not knowing the cannon was still being sealed.

Lol above posts so true, the fighter pilots that have seen the best luck against Israel were PAF volunteers. I would say that the worst are the gulf arabs though lol.

So what you're saying is that the United States (and Israel) is the only reason Iran hasn't overrun the Middle East already.

Idk I think Iran is third in the region, behind Israel, but with Turkey as no. 1

I feel like in a fight to death scenario, Turkey would prevail against Israel.

Israel doesn't have enough nukes to kill a 1/2 of the Arab world, much less the entire Muslim world.

From "what we know" Israel has around 80 nukes, and it's uncertain whether any are deployed (ready to strike). This is absolutely not enough to inflict such massive damage (not to mention they wouldn't be able to reach some parts of the Muslim world). Of course there would be much more death in results of the fallout, illness and longtime climate effects.

No one for sure knows how many nukes they have, but I think it's more than just a few dozen, they want an insurance policy to wipe out all muslims if they ever got to such a drastic point, and they are more than capable of a nation of building the missiles and warheads to make that occur. I bet they have several hundred icbm's with multiple warheads on each.

There are 100,000,000 million Muslims in Indonesia, spread out over hundreds (thousands?) of islands.

edit-not mention the millions of Muslims in western countries (we're a welcoming lot, despite the bad PR)

Ok, well obviously they probably cannot get every single one, but a good majority of them.

probably?

They can't get a majority, and more importantly, there is no scenario in which they'd try.

Speaking as someone extremely critical of the Israeli policies, this is just as stupid as nutjobs from the opposite side claiming Iran wants to do the second Holocaust.

Not every thread concerning the Middle East concerns Israel and in this case, it's managed to totally derail the thread.  Locking.
