It is very unlike most coastal SC counties that are at least vestigially Democratic (most of SC-01). Historically in SC the Lowcountry/coast was Democratic, the midlands were the swing region and the Upstate (where SC-03 and SC-04 are) were strongly Republican? Colleton Berkeley and Beaufort are Republican, but nowhere near as much as Horry. Any ideas?

Way more white people than any of the other counties you name, and fewer black people. Horry County is 80% white. It votes about like Berkeley and Colleton if you adjust for demographics. Beaufort's white population is slightly less Republican than normal for the area because a lot of its population are white transplants from the Atlanta metro.

One of the few areas of the country that is actually getting whiter. Old white people move in in droves, but unlike FL, no minority growth

Mostly because of retirees and working-class white communities. My cousin also goes to Coastal Carolina and worked at the registrar offices during the spring. She said everybody who petitioned to graduate said they were going Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, or Charleston. so you got a bit of brain drain going on there so I would count on any movement toward the Democrats happening anytime soon.

Not exactly. The non-black low country and Midlands were the first to swing Republican in the 1950's, while the back country remained largely democratic till later
