Quote
At the end of the conversation, the diplomat asked to send a message to Israelis: "This blood conflict has lasted too long. It's clear to us - the Saudi Arabians, all of the Persian Gulf countries, Egypt, and Jordan - that the era of warfare with Israel has ended, and that the advantages of normal relations are very great. The entire Arab world can profit from it, not just the Palestinians, and you also, of course. History and Allah have brought a real opportunity to realize this, and I hope that you'll take advantage of it.

Is it insane to hate a regime that explicitly promised to erase you off the map? We're sure getting a lot of compassion from leftists like you. Maybe you should feel how it is to be threatened with genocide.

Good, but doesn't alter the fact Saudia Arabia is the main sponsor of islamist terror in the world. Ideologically and financially. It's a horrible regime that the West should have no business with.

Iran is a horrible regime as well, but at least their people tend to be more educated. Not that this makes their sponor of terrorism and violations of human rights less concering.

I thought the Saudis (and really most Arab countries in the area) had also pledged to erase Israel from the map or some variation on that?

I guess it's nice that they have dropped that.

The KSA exports far more jihadi terrorists to the rest of the world than Iran.

This might not bother self interested short sighted Likudists, but it sure does the rest of us.

It's all interests, of course. The Saudi might've not been for destroying Israel for some time now, but they're just as vile as ever. It's just that Israel can't afford to rebuke powerful neighbours willing to cooperate, not in this neighborhood.

From what I understand, the Saudis never really cared too much about destroying Israel, at least compared to the other Arab nations. Support for the Palestinians was for a while more important to secular leaders like Nasser and later Saddam, two of the main anti-Israeli hardliners, as part of the pan-Arabist ideology. The Saudis did take some steps though to keep up appearances in the Arab world, like taking part in the 1973 oil embargo and sending a small force during the Yom Kippur War, but their alliance with the US and the fact that they were on opposite sides of the nationalist Arabs in the Arab Cold War prevented them from doing much to bother the Israelis.

A short term cooperation for an immediate goal is one thing, but making an ally of a country that is the leading funder of groups devoted to annihiliating you is foolish. And Israel should know better since they did exactly that by making a friend of Hamas (nee Moslem Brotherhood) over al-Fatah back when Palestine was secular (relative to the region).  Its kind of like Likud making friends with US dominionists awaiting the second coming. ...or Reagan eliminating bars on funding more extreme elements of the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan.

Iran has never threatened to "wipe Israel off the map" with an attack, nuclear or otherwise. This lie was debunked and pathetic over a decade ago.

While my sentiment trends towards Iran being better than Saudi while both still suck...

I have to empathize with your position because you realize that if you were caught in either country... they'd execute you for being a limp wristed sissypants DEVILSPAWN.

Just like when the US and UK teamed up with the Soviet Union against Hitler

Both Saudi Arabia and Israel have deluded themselves into thinking they are the US in that situation - that eventually, the other will collapse under the weight of its inherent contradictions, leaving it as the victor with all the spoils of the Middle East.

Not even Saudi Arabia is going to look the other way when Israel starts annexing more parts of the West Bank and gives up even the international pretense of accepting a two-state solution.

They have no reason to care beyond maintaining their credibility as the "defenders of Islam" or whatever.

If Israel assumes control over sites that are holy to Islam, they're going to react to that.

(But that would introduce the awkward wrinkle that traditionally, it is the Hashemites - the royal family of Jordan - not the Sauds, who are seen as the rightful stewards of the Dome of the Rock and other such places.)

The whole comparison is a delusion. Iran is not a democracy, but only an ignorant or a fanatic ultranationalist in Israel could compare the Iranian regime to Nazi Germany. Similarly, Saudi Arabia and Israel are not freedom fighters. The Saudi regime is arguably more oppresive and fundamentalist than the Iranian and its connection to terrorist organizations has been mentioned already. Israel is a state that maintains a prolonged military occupation and has a long record in war crimes and human rights violations. Israel is a flawed democeacy within its legally recognized borders, afflicted by a process of militarization of its politics and society, as well as a state that discriminates minorities and tumbles down into seggregationism.

The conflict in the Middle East is not one of Good against Evil and there is a great deal of cynicism in that Saudi statement. Thank God, Donald Trump did not want to listen John Bolton this time...

Oh, please. Israel has nuclear weapons. Iran isn't going to attack them.

"Death to Israel" is to Iranian politicians what "We will repeal Obamacare" is to Republicans: red meat for the rubes.

Ok? They're still threatening to wipe us off the map and genocide us. It's a bit more serious a threat than repealing Obamacare, and hating them for it is perfectly reasonable. Saying that our hatred of them is insane is both wrong and insensitive.

They've been saying that for like 40 years now. It has yet to happen. Not all threats are credible threats.

It's certainly not such an acute problem that it's worth getting in bed with Mohammed Bone Sawman over.

The Middle East is a very tough neighbourhood. People trying to force Israel to spurn advances for better relations from powerful countries that for years denied its existence have no idea how ridiculous they sound.

Iran 👏🏻 Is 👏🏻 A 👏🏻 Rational 👏🏻 Actor

Of course it is. But it's also an extremely revisionist actor that does everything in its power to change the Middle Eastern power balance to its side, and they're doing this by starting bloody wars like in Yemen (which, interestingly, American "non-interventionists" don't mind coming from Iran) and sending long tentacles of terror and murder across the land. It's rational, sure, but it's also just as evil as Saudi Arabia's actions.
