In 1938, Thomas E. Dewey was the Republican nominee for Governor of New York, and barely lost.

So let's say that instead of barely losing, Dewey ekes out a win over Hebert Lehman then becomes Governor. In 1940, Dewey runs for and wins the Republican nomination.

How would the 1940 election turn out?

FDR was unbeatable and Dewey seen as too inexperienced in these troubling times. Dewey loses by a (little) wider margin than Willkie.

✓ President Franklin D. Roosevelt (D-NY)/Secretary Henry Wallace (D-IA): 474 EVs.; 55.2%
Governor Thomas Dewey (R-NY)/Senator Charles McNary (R-OR): 57 EVs.; 44.4%

Dewey was more experienced than Willkie.....at least the Dewey in this scenario.

Still too inexperienced for being prez in this point of time. Willkie was a better campaigner. The reason Dewey did better in 1944 than Willkie '40 is due to FDR fatigue.

Dewey would still be seen as too young and inexperienced. That combined with his isolationist views espoused by 1940, when the France just falling, would cost him many votes. The latter was the reason Willkie get steam.

Roosevelt performs about the same or slightly better.

You should be banned for thinking Maine and Vermont would vote Democratic. And for having wrong electoral numbers on this map.
