Quote
Arabs are increasingly saying they are no longer religious, according to the largest and most in-depth survey undertaken of the Middle East and North Africa.

More than 25,000 people were interviewed for the survey - for BBC News Arabic by the Arab Barometer research network - across 10 countries and the Palestinian territories between late 2018 and spring 2019.

Since 2013, the number of people across the region identifying as "not religious" has risen from 8% to 13%. The rise is greatest in the under 30s, among whom 18% identify as not religious, according to the research. Only Yemen saw a fall in the category.

Some really interesting data here.

Interesting. I get it that the Israeli government has made mistakes over the decades, but their insane hatred of Israel and Jews has got to stop.

Rather fascinating that Yemen has gotten more religious over time. Perhaps the result of sectarian actors playing groups off of each other? Would have loved to have data for Syria on these questions.

It’s really interesting to note how much more popular the Saudis are than Iran.

I don’t know for sure why Yemen has gotten more religious, but the fact that part of Yemen was Marxist until the early 1990s could be a reason.  No more Marxism, more religion.

That's possible, but the time period polled is far more recent. Perhaps you're right, and kids are being raised more religious than their forebearers who grew up in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.

Radicals could have just killed a lot of the non-religious population, combined with the conflict radicalizing more people to pick sides and demonize the other side.

Honest question here - How do you get accurate polling data from Yemen and Libya?

In Libya, the eastern side is pretty much secure.

I've heard that there are millions of secret atheists in the Middle East who keep quiet in order to stay alive.

Tunisia should join the EU and Eurovision.

Morocco has certainly appeared in the latter before now.

Misleading title, BBC. It's only really North Africa that is improving in that aspect.

I mean, even Australia participates now...
