Jackson 366
Ford 172

Jackson runs about even with Carter in the South, even increased margins in some areas because of Hawkish stance on foreign policy, swing Virginia.  He then also brings to the Democratic column the very close states of Iowa, Illinois, Oregon, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

I think most of you are overestimating Jackson's support in the South.  He might a few states like Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas, but otherwise not many.  Look at 1972.  It was not just McGovern's fault that he lost the South so badly.  It was because National Democrats were  viewed unfavorably.  Carter won the South by such a large margin because was a "Southerner and an American and in that order."
