If he had picked Jack Kemp as his running mate, George H.W. Bush probably does slightly worse in Indiana, but might have carried (or came close to carrying) New York, as Jack Kemp was a relatively influential and popular member of Congress from New York.

He'd definitely be a populist foil to the more patrician Bush.

Kemp would probably perform better than Quayle did, especially when people talk about experience credentials. Needless to say, it'd make the entire "You're no Jack Kennedy" debacle disappear, leaving one of the most badass political comebacks in modern American history un-needed (much to my chagrin). Either way, Kemp would give Bush more credit among the Reagan conservatives & he may actually play a role in making the "No New Taxes" pledge go unviolated, due to Kemp's role in cutting taxes a decade earlier. He may not have that large of an immediate effect in 1988, but he could make a monumental difference in 1992 & beyond (though I personally don't think a different VP would manage to give Bush another term in the end, even if Kemp would've given him more credibility among movement conservative types than Quayle did.).

All this probably sets him up nicely for 1996 or 2000 too, if he still wants to be President.

The biggest differences would be that he'd be likely to run in 1996 as a former Vice President, posing more of a challenge to Dole.

I thought that Bush would pick Kemp as his running mate.  Bush 41 didn't care for Kemp, however, and picked someone who would not upstage him or have his own independent constituency.

Vice President George Bush (R-TX) / Congressman Jack Kemp (R-NY) ✓
Governor Michael Dukakis (D-MA) / Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX)

Bush does a little better, give or take a few states.

I would be inclined to agree with that assessment, though outside of New York becoming a possible pickup for Bush with Kemp on the ticket I don't think there's a lot that changes from the real-life 1988 electoral map.
