This act will help displaced indigenous people in the Chagos Islands return to their ancestral homes. Chagossians were forcibly removed by the United Kingdom between 1967 and 1973. This is a first step towards helping displaced people come back home.

To build an American military base on the island of Diego Garcia.

The ancestors of the modern Chagossians arrived at the archipelago in the 1700’s, as slaves. The French were the original claimants until the colony was transferred to the British. These people lived on the island all the way up until 1973. Starting in 1967, the Chagossians were forcibly removed by the United Kingdom. At first, the UK tried to encourage people to leave voluntary, by buying the corporation that managed labor on the island. When that failed, forced depopulation became necessary. Over 900 people in all were removed from the island of Diego Garcia. Most of them now reside on the island of Mauritius.

Well no matter what the UK has ignored countless calls from foreign governments and countless votes of the UN so I doubt they'll treat this any differently. Though it should be noted that Diego Garcia is a critically important US military base so it would be unwise to do anything strong enough for the UK to consider revoking US military access to Diego Garcia.

I can confirm that the British intend on disregarding this call for action. However, they are not angry and are not considering revoking access to the base.

With a majority of senators voting to pass this bill, the vote will close in 24 hours or when all senators have voted, whichever is sooner, and any Senator who wishes to change his or her vote must do so during that interval.
