Background, the 2004 election:

✓ Senator John Kerry (D-MA)/Senator John Edwards (D-NC): 277 EVs.; 48.6%
President George W. Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY): 259 EVs.; 50.5%

John Kerry barely won OH+NM, enough for a narrow EC victory over George W. Bush. Congressional results are the same.

Recession has not hit yet on election day 2008, and President John Kerry faces former president George W. Bush, who seeks a rematch. Who wins?

Considering this still has Bush winning the popular vote in 2004, I'd say that I can absolutely see Bush running for a rematch in 2008 if Kerry really messed up during his (first) term, regardless of whether there's a recession or not.

President George W. Bush (R-TX)/Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA): 281 EVs.; 50.7%
President John Kerry (D-MA)/Vice President John Edwards (D-NC): 257 EVs.; 48.3%

Bush wins as Kerry would be a lame duck from day one. Bush of course would have a second non consecutive term even more hellish than his actual second term though.
