Mitt Romney wins the 2012 election narrowly and runs for a 2nd term in 2016. He gets challenged by Donald Trump, who runs the exact same campaign than he actually did (attacks Romney like he did with Jeb Bush). What happens?

Romney demolishes Trump.

A big reason for Trump's success in 2016 was that the Republican establishment was divided between 16 other candidates. In this scenario, however, he'd soundly lose to a unified GOP establishment.

Trump gives him Romney a close run for his money, but Romney survives.

How will Trump win New York

I think Romney would win Texas, Arizona, and Florida as well.

The RNC who have crushed Trump. I'm not sure exactly how far Trump would get, but if he ever endangered Romney, the Party would have gone nuclear. Last minute rule changes, backroom deals, superdelegates, maybe even stripping states of their delegates...The reason why this didn't happen in 2016 is:

a. No incumbent Republican President
b. Big and Divided field
c. Party Establishment didn't realize Trump was a genuine threat until too late
d. Other primary candidates squabble against each other and allow Trump to win

If Trump ran against President Romney, it would have been a sh*tfest of epic proportions. There is no conceivable way that the RNC allows the sitting Republican President to lose.

This would probably result in a third party run from Trump and have disastrous consequences for the Party, but that would take a backseat towards protecting the President.

Fox News, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. would have been in President Romney's corner for the past several years, so no space for a challenger to gain a foothold.

I seriously doubt Trump would've done it.
