Hope he’s okay. I’m surprised he didn’t resign before Deal left office. I’d have thought they would both be pragmatic enough to pick his replacement together if God forbid something were to happen to him in the interim. I could only imagine the nutcase Kemp would pick.

Her leaving the seat may also be good incentive for other Ds to let her have the Senate race uncontested. Ossoff, Carter, Nunn, Jen Jordan, Scott Holcomb, and others are right in or near the 6th.

None of them could really compete with her fundraising or endorsements. Moms Demand and other gun control advocates would descend upon Georgia for her.

Just depends on who wants to run statewide in 2022, I'd figure

Gov. Kemp is now taking job applications for the appointment to the seat.

Apparently, it's all about transparency.

Make of that what you will. I wonder if there will be televised job interviews for the finalists, that would be something.
I wonder if someone who lives in Georgia and is on atlas will sign up because why not.

I was going to but I’m not 30 so I did a fake one

Matt Lieberman (yes, of THAT Lieberman family) is the first to officially jump in:

https://www.gpbnews.org/post/matt-lieberman-first-democrat-enter-race-isaksons-senate-seat

Quote
Democrat Matt Lieberman, son of former U.S Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), is the first candidate to enter the race to fill retiring Sen. Johnny Isakson's (R-Ga.) seat in 2020.

In his campaign launch video, the small business owner, former teacher, non-profit founder and political newcomer said he is "fed up with the arrogance and cowardice of the politicians in Washington."

"Nothing... they can't come up with any way of doing anything," he remarks, kicking off a stream of laments and frustration at "these idiots in Washington."

Lieberman's platforms include protecting voting and reproductive rights, refusing corporate PAC money and gun reforms like banning assault rifles and pushing for background checks on every purchase.

That’s gonna be a hard pass from me

Kemp's an idiot cheating bastard and it just goes to show you how bad his team is that they're telling him that he needs to pick some pretty, unassuming woman to try to win back some woke suburbanite women. They're not coming back. He needs to pick the nuttiest nutcase he can find so there's no room for a primary challenger.

She and McSally can enjoy being short serving senators together. This is an absolutely idiotic pick by Kemp.

Trump's approval was 52/47 in the 2018 midterm exit polls in Georgia, unless he suffers some kind of approval rating collapse in 2020 relative to the 2018 midterms Trump will carry Georgia and Loeffler will win as a result, candidate quality doesn't really matter in a presidential year, its all going to be about how the presidential race goes in each state.
The 2018 electorate was more Republican, more white, and older than 2016. The fact that Kemp barely scraped through without a run off in that scenario should sound the alarms for Georgia GOP.

Lindy Miller and John Barrow got 48 percent (!) in a run off where black turnout plummeted. Put someone like Raphael Warnock against Loeffler and she is going to get pummeled.

Someone tells me you will be the one getting pummeled come 2020, sit down you socialist!

As long Trump wins GA again (and he is the favorite here), she will win.

Lol she’s not winning a primary

Don't know why you guys want Collins so bad. He is a significantly stronger candidate than Loeffler by every metric.

Honestly candidate quality doesn’t really matter in a racially polarized/ inelastic state. I think if Loeffler and Collins were to run in a normal election, they’d both end up somewhere between 49.5-50% of the vote. Why this is hilarious is bc Kemp could have totally forgone this if he’d just appointed Collins in the first place. Loeffler is dumping tons of her own money and there’s a not insignificant chance that both her and Collins get locked out of the runoff bc of Kemp’s idiocy. This is prob their last chance to win a senate seat for the foreseeable future too. She’d get destroyed if it was a 1v1 primary.

Does Doug Collins feel entitled to the Senate seat or something?

He's a middle aged white guy Republican, ofc he feels entitled to have it.

So if the "jungle primary" happens...

Does that mean that all candidates will be on one ballot (multiple Republicans, multiple Democrats)? And the a January runoff between the top two vote getters?

That’s correct

Would that be worse for Democrats?

I’m trying to understand why they’re also pushing for a traditional primary along with Collins rather than a jungle primary.

They're worried that Collins and Loeffler split the vote and two Ds get in. Also worried that whoever comes out on the other side of the runoff if it's D vs R has a lot less money in the bank and is damaged goods while Warnock gets a year long lead on running in the GE.

I saw this on tv the other day at work and everyone in the break room (granted it's somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 black employees so it's a D skewing bunch) started busting out laughing.

I know the primary isn't for another 8.5 months but goddamn I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't manage to crack ten percent.  I have no idea what Kemp was thinking appointing her. Money can't buy charm or relating to a base whose quite demographically dissimilar to you.  I highly doubt the rednecks are chomping at the bit to vote for a rich white finance lady from Buckhead who lives in the most expensive house in the entire metro area with an MBA from a private catholic school with no political experience.

Doug Collins will beat Kelly Loeffler in the primary. I've said this before. And if he is the nominee, Georgia will probably be close to Tossup status.

1. There will be no Republican primary here. Collins and Loeffler will both be on the November ballot, along with all other candidates.

2. This race is a Tossup even if Loeffler advances to the runoff (and you could argue that she’d be easier to beat in a runoff than Collins).

What about that measure that was proceeding through the Georgia state legislature? I haven't heard anything more about it. Is it now dead?

As to your second point, I'm still not ready to declare Georgia a Tossup, though it is certainly close to being one. The state still has a slight Republican lean that has yet to be overcome, and I'm still not too sure that 2020 will be the year it happens.

The bill that's going through the house wouldn't take effect this year if it passes. I think it's for the 2022 cycle.

The AJC is saying she’s been flying around on her private jet that lists for $7m that she just paid for in cash in December. Her office confirmed she owns it but didn’t say how much she paid for it.
