A much needed measure for the hard-working teachers of our Southern Region. However i am hesitant about the increase in fuel taxes, as they have been shown to be regressive in nature. I would prefer another form of tax, but if no alternative exists i will support it.

Relatively straightforward analysis of S 19.3-5 Appreciate your teachers act, as requested by YT. The gas tax would raise 20 billion more than it needs to; a $0.15 tax would suffice for the purposes of this bill.

As an aside, I somehow thought that the South already had a gas tax, but apparently it doesn't, looking at the last budget.

The bill says half cent per gallon, not half dollar per gallon. The $/gallon row should be .005. As currently written, the bill only raises $295,934,490.

My mistake (the one in the Lincoln budget is 50 cents so I automatically assumed that it was the same here). I sort of have a hard time imagining that the actual intention was to impose a half-cent gas tax though... like, that obviously would raise pretty much nothing.

If there is an excess, then I'll agree with the proposed amendment.

Do you think debating has gone on long enough?

I am sympathetic towards increasing teacher pay (if tied to student performance), but I believe a regressive gasoline tax is the wrong funding mechanism.

I vote Nay.
