I also did a rematch just for fun in 1964.

The margin was under 10,000 votes in both MI and PA.

Nixon 311
Johnson 227

Depends what scenario:

If Nixon is President and LBJ is the challenger, LBJ wins decisively. He even wins the South because no civil rights bill would have been passed. Now if LBJ runs against Nixon in 1964 after the JFK assassination I think it’s a landslide but closer than Goldwaters loss

This would be a very interesting scenario.  I have to think that Johnson could win in OK (and probably KY and MO).  But Nixon would be highly competitive in states like CT and NY and maybe even MA (Eisenhower did extraordinarily well in these states in 1952 and 1956).  Nixon was a real internationalist--with his foreign policy expertise showing up even back then--which had appeal to the Northeast.

I think the real 1960 election was affected considerably by Eisenhower's inability (health reasons according to Nixon) to campaign as much as he would have liked.  There were plans for him to campaign extensively in IL and MO in the last week--which went to Kennedy by very slim margins.  Losing both states cost 40 electoral votes.  Had Nixon won both states, this would have denied either candidate a majority and thrown the election in the House of Representatives.

Umm. L.B.J. wins in 1960 by a bigger margin, than Kennedy in 1960. He also most likely loses in 1964 to someone moderate like Rockefeller or Romney; on the other hand, he would beat Goldwater by a close call in 64 and get a second term.

Johnson beats Nixon 359-178

This is a rematch assuming Nixon is the GOP candidate and LBJ signs a major Civil Rights Bill.  Johnson wins 276-212-49.

The green states represent states where the state Democratic parties in those states named electors pledged to George Wallace and Strom Thurmond (who would not have become a Republican under these circumstances).
