How would they tap into Clinton and Sanders' support? Does Sanders remain a marginal figure? Does Clinton see a repeat of 2008?

Bernie wouldn't have run if Warren ran.

Clinton still would've easily won.

If Sanders and Warren actually both ran (which, as others are mentioning, was a pretty unlikely scenario in 2016), they would prevent each other from seriously competing with Biden and Clinton. (This isn't so much the case in the 2020 primary because Sanders already has a base of support he didn't have going into the 2016 primary).

I do think that Hillary would still win. Although Biden may have been a tad sharper even just a couple of years ago, I think she would come out on top in the debates, and despite Biden's rank in the administration, I think that a plurality of Democrats believed that she, not Biden, was Obama's righteous successor (partially because of her painstaking 2008 loss).

Not to mention that Hillary pretty successfully walled Biden out super early on by snagging crucial donors and hiring lots of Obama's high-level staffers.

This. The rank and file *and I mean regular loyal Democrats not just people in Washington* wanted Hillary. The only way she wasn't going to be the nominee is if she didn't run.

Theory one: Sanders did as well as he did because Democratic primary voters were rebelling against Hillary. Biden wins the nomination and the election.

Theory two: Sanders did as well as he did because voters were looking for someone outside the establishment. Biden performs very poorly and drops out by March. In theory, primary voters believe they have more control over the nomination process, and the game wasn't simply rigged in Clinton's favor, which helps her. Probably not enough to beat Trump in the EV, however.

Either Hillary wins, and she defeats Trump after being battle hardened...hell, she might even flip GA/NC/FL/AZ in this timeline.

Or Sanders wins based on the base deciding to move forward while the other candidates battle to be "da' best Obama 3.0", he also defeats Trump.

Biden's amazingly terrible campaigning skills stop him from every being much of a threat to Hillary, for being a VP, he's oddly in the same boat as JuliAn this time. I think on some level he knew this, which is why he sat out.

And Warren wasn't enough of a name in 2016.
