Not probable.  The Southern wing would find one candidate to support and push for a major party nomination.

If it did happen, expect a major realignment with the creation of a new liberal (more in the classical, or libertarian, sense) northern party.

Assuming that Strom Thurmond and George Wallace were the only candidates, besides the fact that this would result in outrage in most of the country, and would result in a majority of Americans losing faith for many years in both major parties, I believe Thurmond would win the upper south, Wallace would win the deep south, minus Florida, and the rest of the country would follow more or less established voting patterns at that point in time, with the result something like this:

Thurmond          286
Wallace              252
