The support in the U.S. primarily came from low church Protestants, especially Methodists, and Baptists. Because of stereotypes used to promote the temperance movement, it also got mixed in with Nativism. It was the political sidelining of German Americans during World War I that enabled the passage of the 18th Am nationally. (Both German Catholics and German Lutherans were generally "wet" rather than "dry" on the issue. Scandinavian Lutherans were more likely to be "dry".)
