It has more property taxes than any other state, no low taxes elsewhere, and it just goes for the Democrats (who favor taxes).

Because we believe in having good infrastructure, an educated citizenry, Fire, police, etc. New Jersey is the senses populated state, so naturally we pay a bit more.

I wanna know why people would want to live in low-tax states where the roads are crumbling, businesses are fleeing, and social progress is at a standstill (or going backwards).

People are leaving New Jersey, and it’s not hard to know why

New Jersey has ranked as the highest outbound state since 2012.  In other words, our state had the highest percentage of people moving out versus moving in compared to the other 49 states.

Even as the economy is doing better nationally, our state is lagging behind – and people are taking notice.

An annual survey by a national moving company, which recently released its 42nd report, found that twice as many people left our state than came last year.  The embarrassing streak should be a cause for concern, because the people who are leaving can afford to, and the people who are staying are paying the price.

After income taxes were increased in 2004 on people earning over $500,000, New Jersey lost $18 billion of gross income over the next nine years.  Then the problem got worse.  In 2013, 35 percent of the people who moved out earned over $150,000, just three years later it was 45 percent.  High-income residents decide to reside elsewhere because they are taxed more than in any other state.

Sure, lots of people are leaving New Jersey, as well as California and Colorado. Internal migration is common in the US. The taxes are only going to go up where these people are moving. If your question is why NJ has/“wants” high taxes, it’s because we’re a highly urbanized/developed state, and don’t want an uneducated citizenry. If your question is why they’re leaving, there are more reasons than just taxes. I blame Christie for some of the outward migration, as well as a desire for warmer climate. Anecdotally, friends of mine who left NJ ended up in points south, like Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida.

And because schools would be better and you need taxes for schools.

Better Ranked schools are a self filling prophecy, its mostly the type of parents who actually care about their kids what are willing to move to an area with better schools  but because their parents actually care, they get more care in their childhood upbringing which makes the school ranking go up, even then funding isn't an end all. Just like life happiness peaks after you ear like 75k per year so does school effectiveness, some of the worst schools in the US get the most funding.

Considering that NJ Democrats can’t even get themselves to agree on passing a millionaires tax (or really anything else useful) I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as you make it seem.

Texas is a dump run by oil barons, was one long before any of us were born, and will remain one long after the youngest posters are dead.

Missing the point , GOP 25 year dominance of Texas is a major  reason why it is so prosperous today

Attracting yuppie jet-setters with cheap labor (largely through illegal immigration) is much of the reason why Texas is a dump. Texas suburbs drag everyone else down.

They don't. New Jersey's political system is intransigently, almost inherently corrupt and lethargic. The voters have attempted to stage tax revolts numerous times, but neither party is actually interested in limiting or cutting spending. Democrats are the tax-and-spend party while Republicans are the bond-and-spend party.

I seriously am beginning to think the solution is to have the state annexed into Pennsylvania or New York.

This is why federalism is bad. It gives the wealthy too much power to not have to pay their fair share of taxes when they can easily afford to move to the weakest link state to pay way less. Every state needs tax rates as high as New Jersey so that the rich cannot just move somewhere else to not pay a reasonable amount.

So close to a real, decent point, but ultimately you veered off and crashed into a wall.

You say it's parents who care about their kids who move to good schools. What's also something that's broadly true about where the good schools are located? What's also something that's broadly true about parents who have the wherewithal to move? Here's a hint: it starts with $.

Utah schools are moderately funded and good. Good school funding is important but that doesn't mean we should infinitely fund schools for the KIDZ

Swing and a miss! I was talking about the communities with “good” schools being better off economically (and more white), and the parents with the ability to move being ones with the economic freedom to do so.

To be a first world country with nice things that aren't rotting and falling apart like most of rural red state America is the correct answer.
