What if Gerald Ford selected Ronald Reagan as his running mate after an intense primary contest? How would the 1976 presidential election occur?

TX is the tipping point.

✓ President Gerald Ford (R-MI)/Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA): 274 EVs.; 48.9%
Former Governor Jimmy Cater (D-GA)/Senator Walter (D-MN): 264 EVs.; 49.6%

I think Bob Dole was a bad choice for Ford, he added nothing to the ticket other than being some sort of compromise between the party factions. Ford should have either sticked with Rocky or gone with Reagan. Even though both are very different, I think both would have carried him over the top.

With Reagan:

✓ President Gerald R. Ford (R-MI)/Former Governor Ronald W. Reagan (R-CA): 292 EV. (49.65%)
Former Governor James E. Carter (D-GA)/Senator Walter F. Mondale (D-MN): 246 EV. (48.76%)

With Rocky:

✓ President Gerald R. Ford (R-MI)/Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller (R-NY): 306 EV. (50.06%)
Former Governor James E. Carter (D-GA)/Senator Walter F. Mondale (D-MN): 246 EV. (48.21%)

With Reagan's massive ego, there is no way he would settle for second in line.

As far as I know, Reagan later said he would have accepted the vice presidential spot if Ford offered it to him. Once offered, everybody takes it. Just look at most vice presidents. Rocky also said he never wanted to be vice president of anything.
