Ford wins Ohio, and Carter wins by a teeny tiny margin in the electoral college. Here is something else to think about. If Carter does not do the self-destructive playboy interview; furthermore, he will also pick up Maine, Oregon, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Virginia.

Yeah people often talk about how easy it is for Ford to win but never about how easy it is for Carter to win big electorally given how close so many states were and how much any change can flip it to either a Ford win or a Carter electoral landslide

No effect of course

The Myth of Gerald Ford's Fatal 'Soviet Domination' Gaffe

Quote
But the idea that the remark was badly damaging to Ford is a pernicious misremembering, and the fact that careful outlets and writers are repeating it shows how deeply embedded the myth is. The myth’s endurance, despite little evidence that the moment hurt Ford’s campaign, exemplifies the reality that even the most famous gaffes usually have little effect on elections.

Don't we do this with all elections? People talk about how easy it is for Kerry to win 2004 (while still losing the popular vote just like Ford would've), but the closest state was Kerry's win in Wisconsin. If Bush had won WI, he could've lost OH and still won (barely). And he only lost PA by a little more than Kerry lost OH.

Nobody talks about how easily Goldwater or Mondale could have won.

I meant for (relatively) close elections...we talk about how easy it is for the losing candidate to win, while ignoring that it's also easy for them to lose worse than they did. Romney in 2012 is kinda of an exception to this rule because he lost EVERY close state except one.

Because I don't think they could have won easily

Rockefeller staying on the ticket would possibly swing Ohio and Wisconsin over, and, even more likely, New York. Ford didn’t only regret not picking him because it was a jerky thing to do, but also because it likely cost him the election.
