Since the founding the republicans in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854, the Grand Old Party has nominated alot of generals for president. The ones listed below our those who wonm the Republican Nomination:

1856: General John C. Fremont

1868: General Ulysses S. Grant

1876: General Rutherford B. Hayes

1880: General James A. Garfeild

1888: General Benjamin Harrison

1896: Bridigar General William McKinely

Note: Theodore Roosevlt was a Colonel, not a general.

1952: General Dwight D. Eisenhower

That was a Republican strategy from 1864-1896. They accused Democrats of being traitors who supported the CSA or they were Copperheads. It worked very well up until 1892 when Americans got sick of it and voted the GOP out of office.

Both parties offered their nomination to Eisenhower, but he chose the GOP because he thought it was time for a change, since the Democrats had been in the White House for 20 years.
