After leaving office, he became more conservative. That is what I found out like a minute ago.

How would he do in a presidential election?

He would still be considered responsible for the Great Depression. That alone would tank any presidential bid he'd make.

Worse than Landon, why the GOP establishment vetoed his comeback attempts in 1936 and 1940. But there's a decent chance that he would be Willkie's SOS, and given that both Willkie and McNary would probably die before 1944, Hoover would accede and run as an incumbent. Dem Northern bench is very thin, so he might win a full term since 4 presidents in 3 years would demand stability.

Hoover would have been absolutely destroyed between 1936 and 1948, because Democrats effectively villainized him as the guy responsible for the Great Depression. He also would've been way too conservative for the electorate in the 30s and 40s.

His reputation recovered a bit in the 1950s, but he was in his late 70s and 80s at that point.
