lets pretend that happens and Blackmun retires in 1994, just like he did in real life. Let's also pretend Bush nominates Edith Jones. Do the democrats basically hold it open until 1997?

Nope, they couldn't hold it open until 97. At best they make it an issue in the midterms and make gains, forcing Bush's hand to put up a moderate choice to be nominated in 1995.
