Does anyone feel that this old notion is a fact of reality? Would a candidate lose the election simply because he or she had a blatantly Italian or Polish sounding last name?

I don't think anyone would lose an election simply for that reason, but sadly it would play a role.

Most presidents have had English or NW European names.

I doubt that a man could "Hibler" could have won the 1948 presidential election. Or at least it would be a major liability.

If so, then anyone whose name is one letter clear of 'osama' might be trouble.

Well, "Eisenhower" doesn't sound very American, but he won anyway.

I was going to point that out, but I decided that with all my spelling mistakes, it would be kinda like the pot calling the kettle "black".

Now all we need is for the next president of Iran to be named "Barack" and we'll have the trifecta. Tongue

An ethnic name like that would certainly make him do well among minorities and immigrants.

The following names could create problems:

Saddam bin Laden
Osama Hussein (hmmm...sounds familiar)
just being named Mohammed or Abdullah
Anything remotley close to Hitler or Stalin (like Helmut Hiteller)
